Taiwan (i/ˌtaɪˈwɑːn/; Chinese: 臺灣 or 台灣; see below), officially the Republic of China (ROC; Chinese: 中華民國; pinyin: Zhōnghuá Mínguó), is a sovereign state in East Asia. The Republic of China, originally based in mainland China, now governs the island of Taiwan, which constitutes more than 99% of its territory, as well as Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, and other minor islands, following its loss of the mainland China territory in 1949 in the Chinese Civil War. This remaining area is also constitutionally called the "Free area of the Republic of China" which is not ruled by the Communist Party of China in Beijing.
Neighboring states include the People's Republic of China (PRC) to the west (mainland China), Japan to the east and northeast, and the Philippines to the south. Taiwan is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with a population density of 649 people per km2 in October 2015.Taipei is the seat of the central government, and together with the surrounding cities of New Taipei and Keelung forms the largest metropolitan area on the island.
The armed forces of a country are its government-sponsored defense, fighting forces, and organizations. They exist to further the foreign and domestic policies of their governing body and to defend that body and the nation it represents from external and internal aggressors. In broad usage, the terms "armed forces" and "military" are often treated synonymously, although in technical usage a distinction is sometimes made in which a country's armed forces may include both its military and other paramilitary forces. Armed force is the use of armed forces to achieve political objectives.
The study of the use of armed forces is called military science. Broadly speaking, this involves considering offense and defense at three "levels": strategy, operational art, and tactics. All three levels study the application of the use of force in order to achieve a desired objective.
In most countries the basis of the armed forces is the military, divided into basic military branches. However, armed forces can include other paramilitary structures.
Power may refer to:
"Chinese Taipei" is the name for the Republic of China (ROC) agreed upon in the Nagoya Resolution whereby the ROC and the People's Republic of China recognize each other when it comes to the activities of the International Olympic Committee. It has been used by the ROC as the basis when participating in various international organizations and events, including the Olympics, Miss Earth, Paralympics, Asian Games, Asian Para Games, Universiade and FIFA World Cup.
The term is deliberately ambiguous. To the PRC "Chinese Taipei" is ambiguous about the political status or sovereignty of the ROC/Taiwan; to the ROC it is a more inclusive term than just "Taiwan" (which is to the ROC just one part of China, which it, similarly to the PRC, claims to be the rightful government of the nation in its entirety, and to the PRC the use of "Taiwan" as a national name is associated with independence of the area from the PRC) and "Taiwan China" might be construed as a subordinate area to the PRC.
The military, also called the armed forces, are forces authorized to use deadly force, and weapons, to support the interests of the state and some or all of its citizens. The task of the military is usually defined as defense of the state and its citizens, and the prosecution of war against another state. The military may also have additional sanctioned and non-sanctioned functions within a society, including, the promotion of a political agenda, protecting corporate economic interests, internal population control, construction, emergency services, social ceremonies, and guarding important areas. The military can also function as a discrete subculture within a larger civil society, through the development of separate infrastructures, which may include housing, schools, utilities, food production and banking.
The profession of soldiering as part of a military is older than recorded history itself. Some of the most enduring images of the classical antiquity portray the power and feats of its military leaders. The Battle of Kadesh in 1274 BC was one of the defining points of Pharaoh Ramesses II's reign and is celebrated in bas-relief on his monuments. A thousand years later the first emperor of unified China, Qin Shi Huang, was so determined to impress the gods with his military might that he was buried with an army of terracotta soldiers. The Romans were dedicated to military matters, leaving to posterity many treatises and writings as well as a large number of lavishly carved triumphal arches and victory columns.

I have always loved travelling. I was lucky enough that from a young age, my parents took us all over the place, instilling in us a sense of larger spaces and broadened horizons. As I grew up, I became more independent in my travels and tried to figure out ways to do it more. From learning Spanish in Salamanca to purposefully getting 6 month summer jobs in places I wanted to explore further. I became accustomed to getting lost and just wondering the streets, figuring out where would be the next good meal or when I would stumble onto some secret only locals whispered about. Getting lost was second nature back then. The only resources we had were over-read guide books that by the time you reached their recommendations, the waiters would push their best sellers down your throats. So we h...

This south east Asian island is separated from the Chinese mainland by the Formosa Strait that at its narrowest point is a hundred and thirty kilometres wide. In the old town district of Wan Hua is the city’s oldest and most precious Buddhist temple of Lungshan Szu, the Dragon Mountain Temple. The Sun Yi Sen Memorial Hall was built to commemorate the centenary of the founder of the Republic of China. His efforts brought about the abdication of the last emperor and...

Protests over pensions reform in Taiwan have blocked the opening ceremony of the 2017 Taipei Universiade, an international university sports event, reflecting a heated debate over policy shifts by the ruling party. In the same week, a massive power outage took place in Taiwan, costing the economy millions of dollars and exposing challenges for the ruling party. Meanwhile, the Kuomintang has a new chairman, with Wu Den-yih taking over at a time when the party is seeking to revitalize its support in an effort to successfully challenge the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). What are the nature of the problems Taiwan is facing now? And how will attempts at solving them influence cross-Strait relations, which are currently beset by tensions between Beijing and Taipei?
